IN THE FIRST HALF OF THIS YEAR, WE WERE WORKING ON LANDSCAPE MODIFICATIONS IN THE CITY OF ČESKÁ VES. SPECIFICALLY, WE WORKED AT THE CEMETERY AND ITS SURROUNDINGS, AS WELL AS IN THE AREA OF THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. THE MAIN GOAL OF THESE MODIFICATIONS WAS TO PRESERVE AND SUPPORT THE EXISTING MATURE TREES AND SIMULTANEOUSLY ESTABLISH NEW PLANTINGS THAT SIGNIFICANTLY CONTRIBUTE TO THE EXPANSION OF SPECIES DIVERSITY OF GREEN AREAS IN PUBLIC SPACES.
A SIGNIFICANT PART OF THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AREA IN THE CZECH VILLAGE WAS COMPLETELY WITHOUT PLANTINGS BEFORE IMPLEMENTATION. SHRUBS PLANTED IN THE CEMETERY AREA INCLUDED ONLY HEDGES MADE OF THUJA, WHICH PARTIALLY WITHERED AND DID NOT MEET THE SPATIAL CONDITIONS OF THE SITE. THEREFORE, THE PLANNED MEASURES IN THESE LOCALITIES WERE MAINLY FOCUSED ON ESTABLISHING A NEW SHRUB LAYER, WHICH, IN ADDITION TO AN AESTHETIC ELEMENT, BROUGHT ELEMENTS OF FUNCTIONAL RESIDENTIAL GREEN SPACE WITH SIGNIFICANCE FOR THE LOCAL BIOTA.
THE PLANTINGS PRIMARILY INCLUDED SPECIES THAT PROVIDE SUITABLE SHELTER FOR BIRDS AND SMALL ANIMALS WHILE BEING LOW-MAINTENANCE. THE PLANTINGS ALSO INCORPORATE SHRUBS AND PERENNIALS THAT PROVIDE A FOOD SOURCE FOR INSECT POLLINATORS.
A TOTAL OF 44 TREES, 1,823 SHRUBS, AND 1,187 PERENNIALS WERE PLANTED IN BOTH LOCALITIES.
THANKS TO THE NEWLY ESTABLISHED GREEN SPACES IN THE SCHOOL AREA, CHILDREN HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH NATURE AND OBSERVE ITS CHANGES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, SUCH AS WITHIN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION. PATHS MADE OF GRAVEL HAVE ALSO BEEN CONSTRUCTED IN THE SCHOOL’S COURTYARD. AND SINCE CHILDREN OFTEN LIKE TO TAKE SHORTCUTS, PATHS HAVE BEEN CREATED EVEN WITHIN THE GRAVEL BEDS.
AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE FOLLOWING VIDEO, DUE TO THE CHALLENGING ACCESSIBILITY, WE WERE ACTUALLY FORCED TO USE A CRANE TO ACCOMPLISH THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE SCHOOL COURTYARD ITSELF.
AND THIS IS WHAT THE FLOWERS LOOKS LIKE JUST A FEW MONTHS AFTRE PLANTING 😉
